Perris
Agriculture and the railroad played predominant roles in Perris's early history. The California Southern Railroad laid tracks through Perris Valley in 1881, terminating the Santa Fe Railway's transcontinental route at San Diego. Fredrick Thomas Perris was put in charge of surveying and constructing the route. Perris was incorporated in 1911. For many years, alfalfa, sugar beets and the King potato were staples of farming in the valley. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the construction of Lake Perris made the area attractive recreationally.

Today, Lake Perris State Park continues to offer an abundance of diversions. Swimming, boating, fishing, sailing, water-skiing and scuba diving are all encouraged within the park. Also within the park are opportunities for horseback riding, rock climbing, hiking and biking. In addition, the Ya' Heki' Regional Indian Museum is in the area. Thrill seekers can visit Perris Valley Skydiving, California's only resort skydiving center.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Lake Perris Sports Pavilion, where visitors can wager on live horseracing via satellite at tracks around the world. At Perris Auto Speedway, racing fans can watch Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Champ Trucks, Dwarfs and Cruisers.

Many unique museums call the Perris area home, including the March Field Air Museum. The museum is home to over 60 historic aircrafts and depicts the history of March Field, now March Air Reserve Base. Visitors can view informational films in the theater or experience the G-force Flight Simulator. The Orange Empire Railway Museum is also a unique, increasingly recognized museum in the area. This museum displays artifacts of rail transportation history and includes Santa Fe, red car and 3-foot gauge collections, among many others.

Perris residents retain a strong sense of community through community events. The Winter BBQ and Games in January provides free games, contests and food. Strutt Your Mutt in April takes place in Copper Creek Park and features costumed pooches and contests such as "Doggie-Owner Look-a-Like" and "Best Tail Wagger." The Southern California Fair in October, formerly the Farmers Fair and Festival, is an entertaining nine days of concerts, rodeos, carnival rides, games, livestock exhibits, food and commercial exhibitors.

The city of Perris also promotes excellence through education. In addition to numerous elementary and high schools, Perris offers proximity to campuses of the University of California, Riverside Community College, California State University, Mt. San Jacinto Community College and California Baptist University.

Perris residents enjoy affordable housing, clean air and beautiful landscapes. If you seek the perfect Southern California town in which to live, work and play, look no further than Perris!
